From the winter semester 2012/13, it will be possible for students at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences to obtain the Six Sigma Green Belt certificate as part of the Master’s degree course in Business Management. Green Belt training in accordance with the quality guidelines of the European Six Sigma Club (ESSC-D) takes place in the new “Operation Management” specialization for Master’s students. All operational processes in the company are considered. Most of the practical training takes place in the model factory at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences. The concept and implementation come from the team of professors Dr. Elmar Bräkling, Dr. Ayelt Komus and Dr. Bert Leyendecker, who developed the model factory two years ago. “We are delighted with the positive feedback from industry. It confirms our decision to provide students with additional qualifications using the globally recognized Six Sigma methodology,” say the professors.
In addition to a theoretical part, the Six Sigma Green Belt training always includes the implementation and successful completion of a Green Belt project. This demonstrates the correct application of what has been learned. Such a project can be carried out by students in consultation with companies either as part of the Master’s project or the Master’s thesis. The result of a Six Sigma Green Belt project is usually a significant improvement or even savings for the company. This creates a real win-win situation between the company, students and the university.
The guidelines for the training and certification of Six Sigma Green Belts were adopted by the ESSC-D in 2009. Compliance with the guidelines is a prerequisite for certificates issued to bear the ESSC-D logo.
