Last June, the AutoUni in Wolfsburg devoted itself to the topic of Six Sigma for the first time. Under the title “Quality Methods – Automotive Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)”, experts and members of all German car manufacturers discussed the possible applications of the Six Sigma methodology in the automotive industry.
Many methods in automotive development and automotive engineering are referred to as quality methods, even if they are not necessarily applied by the Quality Assurance organizational unit.
A particularly good example is the method-integrative model of “Design for Six Sigma”, also known as DFSS. As the name suggests, this method is used particularly in the product development process. At the AutoUni conference in Wolfsburg, the results of a working group of the German Association of the Automotive Industry on the implementation of DFSS were presented and discussed.
“We have been using Design for Six Sigma very successfully for years in the development of new products. The consistent application of the method helps us a lot to avoid errors early on in the product development process and to make the right decisions,” said Karlheinz Eichinger (Hager-Tehalit) on the sidelines of the conference. He represented the European Six Sigma Club Germany (ESSC-D) at the conference with his own presentation.
Further events on the topic are planned, including a theme day on Design for Six Sigma on the fringes of the IAA in Frankfurt in September.
