Six Sigma is an established method, and companies and users alike are satisfied with the project results. At the same time, however, they would like to see shorter project durations. This is the result of a recent survey of members of the ESSC-D, the largest interest group for the Six Sigma methodology in German-speaking countries. The respondents come from various industries such as chemicals, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, precision mechanics, optics and telecommunications. For the future, they would like to see Six Sigma more firmly anchored in the long-term strategy of their organizations. They also want solutions for innovation topics and in the area of research and development. “The survey shows that Six Sigma has a fixed methodological value and which topics we need to work on in the future,” says Dieter Szemkus, Chairman of the ESSC-D.
The majority of respondents use several process optimization methods in their organizations; in addition to Six Sigma, these are primarily Lean and CIP. Six Sigma is used in production in particular, followed by administrative areas, supply chain management (SCM) and work preparation. The objectives are quality improvement, cost savings and improvements in logistics. As a rule, its use in companies is limited to one or two areas, but the association sees further potential by extending it to other areas.
